I have been writing stories even before I could write. (As a three year old, I dictated animal stories to my mother so she could write them down for me). While my classmates moaned and groaned about their writing projects, I relished them. I wish I could say I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life after graduating college (B.A. in Communications from Adelphi). Writing was always my passion. Instead I loafed around NYC, skipping to and from employment agencies, and landed a job at small public relations job. While my supervisor lamented my poor secretarial skills on a daily basis, he liked the press releases I wrote. Instead of digging deeper into what I was good at, I landed a cushy secretarial job at an international bank, continuing my administrative assistant path, and improved my administrative assistant skills.
One day I bumped into a childhood friend in an elevator on my way to a boxing class. I hadn’t seen her in 15 years. She said she was going back to school for her masters. “I’m working on my MFA in Writing,” she announced. Eureka! What? Taking two years off to work on my writing sounded like heaven to me. Something churned in me. I set out to find out about different MFA Programs in New York, and ended up at Columbia. Little did I know as I was applying to graduate programs that I’d be toting along my baby daughter by the time graduation day came in May 2002. (Nothing will speed up your thesis project like pregnancy). After graduation I became a freelance writer so I could stay home with my daughter.
Since then I have written for Fit Pregnancy, SELF, American Baby, WomansDay.com, DAYSPA magazine, Headspace.com, Chronogram.com, and Specialty Retail Report. In 2006 I became a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. After falling in love with my new home in the Hudson Valley, I launched Hudson Valley Good Stuff in January 2009. HVGS is a hyper-local tourism blog that promotes the Hudson Valley.
In August of 2014, I moved to Saratoga County with my family. I remain the Editor-in-Chief of Hudson Valley Good Stuff, and write about my new adventures in Albany, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, and Ballston Spa. I’ve put the domain name on the market.
